VW PASSAT

A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has been fitted on VW Passat vehicles from
approximately 2005 onwards. The TPMS system monitors the pressures in each of the tyres and if
the pressure drops in any one of the tyres, a warning light displaying which tyre has deflated is
displayed in the vehicles warning display assembly.

In the event of a faulty tyre pressure sensor being found on the vehicle, a new tyre pressure
sensor will need to be fitted and configured (programmed) into the TPMS control module.

Usually the only method of configuring a new tyre pressure monitor sensor is by using diagnostic
equipment to enter manufacturer's codes for the new tyre pressure sensor, in order to allow the
TPMS control module to recognise the new tyre pressure sensor.

Fortunately on the VW Passat vehicle (and most likely correct for other VW, Seat, Skoda & Audi
vehicles fitted with the same TPMS system), a manual tyre pressure sensor configuration method
has been sourced.

Tyre pressure sensor configuration

Note. It may be advisable to use an approved battery trickle charger whilst carrying out the
following procedure, as extended periods of leaving the ignition switched "ON" may result in the
vehicle battery becoming discharged!

1. With the vehicle stationary, switch the ignition to the "ON" position for 20 minutes.

2. After 20 minutes the TPMS control module will enter into configuration mode.

3. Switch the ignition to the "OFF" position (remove any battery trickle chargers)

4. Start and drive the vehicle for at least 7 minutes with a minimum speed of 16mph.

5. The Tyre pressure monitoring system will then recognise the new sensor signals, and the
warning light in the instrument cluster will now extinguish.
